Civilization vs. Savagery
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

"[Ralph] lifted the conch. 'Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.'"
- this proves that at the beginning of the book at least, they do start civil.
"[Jack] tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up." pg. 51
- at the beginning of the book, Jack couldn't bring himself to kill that pig, but now he can't wait...
"[Ralph] sunned himself in their new respect and felt that hunting was good after all." pg. 124
- this shows that power can corrupt people and make them say things that really aren't true
"There was loathing, and at the same time a kind of feverish excitement in his voice." pg 173
- this is Ralph talking about what they did to Simon. Despite Ralph being a normally civil person, even he was overwhelmed by the savagery of everyone else.
"[Ralph] pushed his hair up and gazed at the green and black mask before him, trying to remember what Jack looked like." pg. 197
- this shows that savagery truly changes us, as Ralph couldn't even remember what Jack looked like
"Viciously, with full intention, [Jack] hurled his spear at Ralph." pg. 201
- this whows that Jack changed from being civil to savage. at the beginning of the book, he never would have thrown a spear at someone, but by the time he was savage, he changed.
"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!" pg. 206
- this chanting is very savage and raw, and very unlike what civil people would do.
